Basic Peppermint Shower Steamer Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups baking soda
- 1/3 cup distilled water or regular water (up to 1/2 cup as needed)
- 10–12 drops peppermint essential oil
- Wilton candy cane icing decorations (12 pieces)
- Optional: a few drops eucalyptus oil, lavender oil, or lemon essential oil for added aromatherapy benefits
- Optional: organic food coloring or dried herbs for decoration
Optional Textured Steamer Variation
- 1/2 cup Epsom salts
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 2 tbsp water
- 20 drops peppermint essential oil
Materials
- 12-count silicone mini muffin mold
- Airtight container or mason jar for storage
- Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large metal or glass mixing bowl, add 1 1/2 cups baking soda (or use 1/2 cup baking soda and 1/2 cup Epsom salts for the textured version). Stir to combine evenly.
- Add Water Gradually: Pour 1/4 cup of water into the mixture and stir thoroughly. Slowly add more water as needed, up to 1/2 cup total, until the consistency resembles damp sand—be careful not to add too much water to avoid activating the fizz prematurely.
- Add Essential Oils: Drop in 10-12 drops of peppermint essential oil. Optionally, add a few drops of eucalyptus, lavender, or lemon essential oil for additional aromatherapy effects. Mix well to disperse the fragrance evenly throughout the mixture.
- Mold the Shower Steamers: Firmly press the mixture into each cavity of your 12-count silicone mini muffin mold. Smooth the tops with your fingers or a spoon. You can sprinkle dried herbs or add a drop of food coloring or citrus oils on top for decoration.
- Insert Candy Cane Decoration: Gently press one Wilton candy cane icing decoration into the center of each steamer. Avoid pressing too hard to prevent breakage.
- Dry the Steamers: Allow the molded shower steamers to sit in a dry, shaded area away from direct sunlight for 24 hours to harden completely.
- Remove and Store: Once dry and firm, carefully remove the steamers from the silicone mold. Store them in an airtight container or mason jar placed in a dark, cool location until ready to use.
- How to Use: Place one shower steamer on the floor of your shower, out of direct water flow but close enough for the hot water to activate the fizzing and release of peppermint scent. Avoid direct skin contact with the steamer to prevent irritation.
Notes
- Use distilled or filtered water for best results to avoid impurities affecting the steamer’s consistency.
- Essential oils should be pure and of therapeutic grade for safety and maximum benefit.
- Be cautious with water measurement; too much water will cause premature fizzing and ruin the mix.
- Shower steamers are safe for inhalation aromatherapy but should not be ingested or used on skin directly.
- Store steamers in an airtight container to maintain their potency and prevent moisture absorption.
- Optional ingredients like dried herbs or food coloring personalize your steamers and add visual appeal.
- Experiment with different essential oil combinations for tailored aromatherapy effects.
