Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt

Garlic Butter Topping

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Activate yeast: In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast and granulated sugar in warm water (110°F). Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture turns foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Make the dough: Add the all-purpose flour, melted butter, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until the ingredients begin to come together, then knead the dough for 8-10 minutes on a floured surface or using a mixer with a dough hook until smooth and elastic.
  3. First rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, covering it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  4. Preheat oven: While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Shape the breadsticks: Punch down the risen dough to release air. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and roll each piece into a breadstick shape approximately 6-7 inches long.
  6. Second rise: Place the shaped breadsticks onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between them. Cover loosely with a towel and let them rise another 30 minutes until puffy.
  7. Bake: Bake the breadsticks in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until they turn a golden brown color.
  8. Prepare garlic butter topping: While the breadsticks bake, combine melted butter, garlic powder, and salt in a small bowl.
  9. Brush and serve: As soon as the breadsticks come out of the oven, generously brush them with the garlic butter mixture. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture. Enjoy!

Notes

  • For a chewier texture, use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour.
  • Ensure your water is not too hot as it can kill the yeast; 110°F is ideal.
  • You can substitute garlic powder with freshly minced garlic for a stronger garlic flavor.
  • Brush the breadsticks again with garlic butter halfway through baking for extra flavor and moisture.
  • These breadsticks freeze well; freeze after baking and reheat in the oven before serving.
