Clove Oil Infusion
- 6 tablespoons cloves
- Olive oil (enough to fill an 8 oz jar half full with cloves, then topped to cover cloves fully)
Water Phase
- 112.5 g distilled water
- 6 g glycerin
- 0.75 g guar gum
Oil and Emollient Phase
- 9.75 g shea butter
- 6 g BTMS 50 (Behentrimonium Methosulfate emulsifier)
- 3 g cetearyl alcohol
- Infused clove oil (from above)
Additives
- 0.75 g vitamin E
- 1.5 g rosemary essential oil
- 1.5 g Optiphen preservative
- Prepare Clove Powder: Measure out six tablespoons of cloves and crush them using a mortar and pestle to make a powder, or keep them whole if preferred.
- Infuse Clove Oil: Transfer the clove powder and pieces into an 8 oz jar until half full. Fill the jar with olive oil, ensuring the cloves are fully submerged. Place the jar in a warm sunny spot for 2-4 weeks for natural infusion or use a crock pot to gently heat for 2-5 hours for quicker results.
- Strain Infused Oil: Once infusion is complete, strain the mixture through cheesecloth to separate the clove pieces from the oil, obtaining the infused clove oil.
- Prepare Water Phase: In a heat-safe container, measure 112.5 grams distilled water. In a separate container, mix 6 grams glycerin and 0.75 grams guar gum, then stir this blend into the distilled water thoroughly.
- Prepare Oil Phase: In another heat-safe container, combine 9.75 grams shea butter, 6 grams BTMS 50, 3 grams cetearyl alcohol, and the measured infused clove oil.
- Heat Both Phases: Set up a water bath and place both containers (water phase and oil phase) into the bath over low heat. Heat until the shea butter and emulsifiers are melted and the water phase is warm and similar in temperature, then remove from heat.
- Combine Phases: Slowly pour the oil phase into the water phase and use a handheld whisk to mix vigorously until the mixture thickens and emulsifies, becoming creamy and less watery.
- Add Vitamins and Essential Oils: Incorporate 0.75 grams vitamin E and 1.5 grams rosemary essential oil into the mixture and blend thoroughly.
- Add Preservative: Finally, add 1.5 grams Optiphen preservative to the mixture and blend well to ensure safety and shelf stability.
- Package: Pour the finished conditioner into a clean 4 oz jar and seal. Use as desired to nourish and condition hair.
Notes
- For a faster infusion of clove oil, using a crock pot on low heat is effective but monitor temperature to avoid overheating.
- BTMS 50 acts as an emulsifier and conditioning agent, ensuring oil and water mix well.
- Guar gum is used as a natural thickening agent to achieve creamy texture.
- This conditioner is preservative-treated with Optiphen to extend shelf life, but store in a cool, dry place and discard if any changes in smell or texture occur.
- Using vitamin E enhances antioxidant properties and helps prolong the product’s freshness.
